Free Crochet Pattern-- Mr.Duboo

Wednesday, December 4, 2019

The word duboo (두부) is the Korean word for tofu. Tofu is a staple in our house and is the most preferred source of protein amongst my children and myself. All four of us are not big meat eaters but tofu is definitely something that we choose to eat a couple times a week.

Mr. Duboo was crocheted after I came across some cute Asian characters at the grocery store. One of the characters reminded me of tofu and I thought how cute it would be to make one for my kids. Let's just say he was a success and was quickly named by my daughter Sophia.

Mr. Duboo can be crocheted in about one hour, maybe even less. He is a quick and fun little project. He can also have two different looks depending on how you choose to assemble him. The above picture shown was assembled by single crocheting along the edges. Meanwhile, the Mr. Duboo shown below was mattress stitched. The choice is yours how you would like your tofu.

Materials

-4.0mm crochet hook
-1 skein of Patons Alpaca Blend (or category 5 yarn)
-any worsted weight yarn in black in red
-tapestry needle
-stitch marker

Gauge

8.5 sts and 9.5 rows = 2”

Measurements

Roughly 2.5” all the way around

Abbreviations

ch- chain
sc- single crochet
BLO- back loops only

Notes

When sewing on Mr.Duboo’s face, count your stitches and rows starting from the bottom-right corner.

If you choose to make your tofu boxy, you can cut out square pieces of cardboard (or plastic canvas as someone suggested) to support the sides of the cube.

Pattern

Long panel

Chain 10

Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook, sc across (9)

Row 2-10: ch1, sc across

Row 11: ch 1, sc in BLO

Row 12-20: ch1, sc across

Row 21: repeat row 11

Row 22-30: ch1, sc across

Row 31: repeat row 11

Row 32-40: ch1, sc across

Square panels (Make 2)

Chain 10

Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook, sc across (9)

Row 2: Row 2-10: ch1, sc across

Leave a long tail for sewing (if you choose to mattress stitch).

Assembly

Take your long panel and mattress stitch your first row and your last row together (using the inner loops) to make 4 walls of the cube. Take a square panel and thread some black yarn on your tapestry needle. Starting from the bottom right, we are going to shape our mouth. From behind your panel, stick your tapestry needle up between stitches 2 and 3 and rows 3 and 4 (counting from the bottom-right).

Use small stitches to achieve well-defined lines.

Go diagonally to the left 1 stitch and 1 row down. Then stitch up diagonally to the left 1 stitch and up 1 row. You should be between stitches 4 and 5 and rows 3 and 4. Now make stitches going diagonally to the left 1 stitch and down 1 row. From here, sew diagonally 1 stitch to the left and up 1 row. You should now have a wide ‘w’ shaped smile shaped on your square.

Take your tapestry needle from the back and now find the edge of your closed left eyelid. The starting point will be 2 rows up and 1 stitch to the left from the last point where you stitched your smile. After pulling your black yarn through, sew 1 stitch to the right. The last part of your left eyelid, will be 1 stitch to the right and 1 row up. After completing your closed eyelid, make a small eyebrow between rows 7 and 8 and stitches 6 and 7.

**Do not worry about the mess behind the square. This will all be hiding inside the Ami.

Moving on to the other eyelid, we want to insert our needle up through stitches 3 and 4 and rows 6 and 7. Move your black yarn down diagonally to the right 1 stitch and 1 row down. The last part of your eyelid will be 1 stitch over on the same row. Make your eyebrow between stitches 2 and 3 and rows 7 and 8.

Take your red yarn and start making an outline of your tongue below and continue to string the yarn from the top (the center of your lips) to the outlined tongue below the lips.

You now have the option to continue to use your tapestry needle and mattress stitch along the edges of the square panels or single crochet along the edges. Mattress stitching will give you a rounder tofu while the single crocheted option will give you a more defined edging giving it a more boxy look. The choice is yours.

When you are on your last square, leave the last side open to fill the tofu up with poly-fil. Stuff as much (or as little as you’d like) and then continue to close up that last side. Before completely closing the cube, give it a last bit of stuffing and then completely close the cube. Weave in your ends.

Let's keep in touch! Hashtag #modestybylaura with your finished Mr.Duboo on Instagram. Can't wait to see yours!

Laura

Free Crochet Pattern-- Bunny Keychain

Monday, April 15, 2019

Perfect for Easter and spring, this simple and quick bunny Amigurumi can be an accessory to your keys, purses, and book bags. Who can resist a cute bunny?

Mild tempered, timid, fluffy and cuddly bunnies would be a dream pet. But in household like mine, the poor bunnies would probably end up with strokes from being chased by little terrors; A.K.A my children.

Amigurumi is definitely something I struggle with as a designer. Not because I find it difficult to design, but because I absolutely hate tapestry work and working with tiny stitches. When I talk with Amigurumi designers, they tell me stories of crochet hooks breaking. I was shocked that it is fairly a common thing that happens to Amigurumists. So kudos to all of you makers who mainly make Amigurumi. You have my respect.

Free Crochet Pattern-- Buzy Bee Keychain

Friday, March 22, 2019

The Buzy Bee Keychain is a quick and easy pattern. Bring a cute little bumble bee along for the ride without getting a sting in the butt because you accidentally sat on it.

Honestly, I am not a huge bee fan at all. Sure I love their honey and sure I'm aware of their importance. BUUUUUUUUT, I've gotten stung enough times that I legit have a reason to not to like them.

But hey! Now I can say I like them as long as they're squishy and made out of yarn. I hope that you love this itty bitty busy bumble bee pattern!

Free Crochet Pattern-- This Little Piggy Keychain

Friday, February 1, 2019

I truly give my respect to those crocheters who design Amigurumi. I feel like it takes a lot of patience to work with only single crochet and the tapestry needle. Does anyone else dread sewing and weaving in ends into small Amigurumi parts? For this reason, the only Amigurumi patterns I will design will be little keychains. Whenever you have scraps of yarn, come on over to Modesty and see if you can use any of those scraps to make a small cute keychain. I'll do my best to keep adding small keychain patterns on this blog.
To tell you the truth, I wasn't planning on designing anymore Amigurumi patterns, at least not so soon. However, my children's Sunday School teacher ordered ten keychains.
You see, I had made a bunch of Amigurumi keychains for several craft fairs last fall. However, I wasn't making enough money to make it worth while. So with the leftover keychains that I had, I gifted them all to the children and Sunday School teachers for Christmas. So, a week and a half ago my kids' Sunday School teacher ordered ten keychains and I happily said yes. After posting a picture of some of them on Instagram, I decided to write up a few of the Amigurumi keychain patterns I had crocheted for her. So today I will be sharing with you This Little Piggy Keychain.
I think the timing of releasing this keychain is perfect. Lunar New Year is next Tuesday and this year is the year of the pig. Plus, who doesn't like a cute pig?

Materials

-any worsted weight yarn (pink and brown, Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn was used in the picture)
-one pair of 9mm or 10 mm safety eyes
-stitch marker
-polyfil stuffing
-a keychain of your choice
-3.5 mm or 4.0mm hook
-tapestry Needle

Abbreviations

sc- single crochet
inc- single crochet increase (2 single crochets in 1 stitch)
invdec- invisible decrease If you are unfamiliar with this stitch
slst- slip stitch
* - repeat stitches from first asterisk to second asterisk
MR- magic ring  If you are unfamiliar with the magic ring or magic circle
( )- the number of stitches at the end of the round

Notes

Make stitches tight as to not let the stuffing come through the stitches.

Ears (Make 2)

Round 1: Create a MR and crochet 5 sc into the ring, pull on the tail to close the MR
Round 2: sc around (5)
Round 3: 2sc in the first st, sc in the next 2 sts (this round will not be finished)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Snout

Round 1: Create a MR and crochet 5hdc into the ring, sl st into the first hdc, pull on the tail to close the MR
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Head

Create a MR

Round 1: crochet 6 sc into the ring, pull on the tail to close the MR

Round 2: *2sc in the next st* 6 times (12)

Round 3: *sc in the next st, 2sc in the next* (18)

Round 4: *sc in the next 2 sts, 2sc in the next st* (24)

Round 5: sc around

Round 6-7: Repeat row 5

Round 8: *sc in the next 2 sts, invdec*repeat 6 times (18)

Round 9: sc across

Sew in your ears. This is the time to attach your keychain.

Round 10: *sc in the next st, invdec* repeat 6 times (12)

Sew on your pig’s nose. Get some brown yarn and make nostrils on your piggy’s little snout. Place your safety eyes between rows 7 and 8 about 3 sts apart. Stuff your pig with poly-fil.

Row 11: invdec to the end (6)

Fasten off and fill up on poly-fil and close up the bottom. I find that using the end of a pencil with an eraser does a good job getting the poly-fil inside the head. Weave in your loose end.

Hope you enjoyed this pattern. As always, leave your thoughts and comments down below. I would love to hear from you!

Free Crochet Pattern -- Pikachu Keychain

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

I remember watching Pokemon as a kid and honestly, I still cannot believe that this cartoon is still airing on TV. I have no clue what the current Pokemon show looks like today but I am aware that kids are still watching it. So in honor of Pokemon and its many years of airing I have created a Pikachu keychain pattern.

I looked high and low for a free pikachu pattern online but all the amigurumi patterns for Pikachu were quite time consuming. So I decided to create a keychain pattern for this cute little Pokemon.

Materials

Any worsted weight yarn (yellow, black, and red, Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn was used in the picture)
One pair of 9mm or 10 mm safety eyes
Stitch marker
Polyfil Stuffing
A keychain of your choice
3.5 mm or 4.0mm hook
tapestry needle

Abbreviations

sc- single crochet
inc- single crochet increase (2 single crochets in 1 stitch)
invdec- invisible decrease (crochet two stitches together by using front loops only)
slst- slip stitch
* Repeat stitches from first asterisk to second asterisk
mc- magic circle
( )- the number of stitches at the end of the round
Make stitches tight as to not let the stuffing come through the stitches.

Pattern

To save this pattern for later, pin it in Pinterest.

Make two
Round 1: Starting with black yarn create a magic circle and make 4 sc into the circle. (use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning stitch of each round)
Round 2: *2sc in next stitch, 1sc in next stitch*(6)
At this time, pull the end of the yarn to close the magic ring. I like to make a knot to make sure the ring doesn’t open again.
Round 3-6: Change yarn color to yellow, sc around
Stuff the ear with polyfil stuffing
Round 7:  Invdec, sc to the end of the round (5)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing

Red Cheeks

With red yarn
MR and put 6 sc into circle , slst into first sc and leave a long tail. Close the circle.

Round 8: sc around until you have 2 sc left and do an invdec (24)
Round 9: *sc in next two stitches, invdec* (18)
Round 10: sc around

Using black yarn make a nose between rows 9 and 10.  Sew in both ears.  Place safety eyes between rows 8 and 9 about 4-5 stitches apart. Attach the red cheeks on either end of the face.
I like to attach my keychain at this time.
Round 11: *1 sc, invdec* (12)
Stuff the head with poly-fil.

Round 12: invdec to the end (6)
Fasten off and leave a tail to close the head and weave in the end.
Firmly stuff the head and close the opening by weaving in and out of the stitches. Weave in the remaining.
I hope you enjoy your Pikachu keychain!
